At events and seminars, one of the most common questions we were asked was "What is the best essential oil I should get?" There are so many different kinds of essential oil to choose from; it can be overwhelming. Here is a list of our recommendations to get started with. Some are chosen because of their versatility, others are our personal favorites. Have fun putting together your own collection!
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is probably the one of most commonly known essential oil. Many believe that every home should have a bottle of lavender oil because of its versatile nature.
Lavender contains a significant percentage of linalyl acetate, a chemical that has stress reducing quality. Keep a bottle of lavender essential oil in your first aid kit. It can be applied neat (without dilution) on minor cut wounds and burns. It also helps to prevent scaring.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is associated with improving memory. In the olden days, brides often wore or carried rosemary branches at their wedding ceremony. Some believe they did so to help them keep a good memory of their wedding. Rosemary essential oil has a reputation for increasing circulation. Rosemary can counteract symptoms of stress, such as depression and fatigue. Massage with Rosemary oil can increase attentiveness, alertness, while increasing breathing rate and blood pressure.
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil is known for its potent anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Tea Tree oil is rich in terpinen-4-ol, a very effective antimicrobial which is also antifungal. Tea Tree oil has been long valued for its antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. In the 1920s, it was used in dentistry and surgery to help clean wounds and prevent infections. Tea tree oil is a strong pure concentrate; very little is needed to achieve results. Therefore it should be used sparingly.
Oil from the citrus family: Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis), Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi), Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), Lemon (Citrus Limon)

Citrus essential oil is uplifting, and it is a familiar smell. Citrus generally supports the immune system and promote well-being. Citrus essential oil is a mood enhancer for those who experiences depression, exhaustion and overwork.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)
There are many species of eucalyptus essential oil. Eucalyptus globulus, in particular, is known for its benefits to our respiratory system. It is effective against a range of bacterial respiratory pathogens. Diffuse eucalyptus globulus to relieve headaches associated with sinus congestion.
Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)
The cooling effect of peppermint essential oil contracts and tightens the tissues. Use it to make your own cooling mist or roller with carrier oil. It is also a good digestive, and it is commonly used for counteracting nausea.
